We all know how important protecting our skin from sun damage is, but some of us shy away from sunscreen because it’s usually packed with so many harmful chemicals. Luckily – now that natural products are on the rise – we don’t have to choose between sunburns and toxins! We can protect our skin more naturally with different non-toxic sunscreens.
Our skin is our largest organ, so every time you use a lotion, spray or perfume, you should think about it being soaked into your body. If you think about it, it’s not much different than eating processed foods packed with antibiotics – it’s all being absorbed. So, now that summer is in full swing, I wanted to share a few tips and sunscreen brands for the whole family!
When spending time by the pool or on the beach, I don’t typically apply sunscreen until I notice a slight shade of pink on my skin. I know this might sound counter-intuitive – most of us have been trained to lather up before we settle into our lounge chairs. However, I learned this tip from my natural guru friend, Courtney Kahla, and it makes a lot of sense! Most children and adults are naturally deficient in Vitamin D, so you actually want to to get some sun before applying sunscreen. This goes for your little ones, too! Let them get a little pink, then layer on the sunscreen.
Most pediatricians suggest NOT applying sunscreen on children under six months. Temple is four months right now, and we usually let her hang out in the sun for a little while in her organic swim diaper with some organic coconut oil all over. When we notice she is starting to get some sun, we put her Swimzip swimsuit on- it’s made with UPF 50+ UV fabric (the highest sun protection rating available) and blocks 98% of UVA and UVB rays. I always put her in a sunhat, too! BONUS, because it’s adorable.
I love to use this coconut skin butter or this organic coconut oil all over my skin (and Temple’s) when I first get in the sun, especially when I’m laying out. Coconut oil has so many benefits, and your skin will soak up all those nutrients and feel so moisturized. When I notice a slight shade of pink, I apply one of the clean sunscreens listed below!
Kypris Pot of shade SPF30– This is the sunscreen that my husband and I use daily! After my morning nontoxic skincare routine, I apply this SPF all over my face, neck, and even ears before applying my makeup.
COOLA Face SPF 30– Mineral sunscreen that doesn’t feel heavy or greasy. I use Kypris SPF on my face every day under my makeup, but I like to apply the Coola face spf if I plan to be outside for prolonged periods. I always pay extra close attention to my face when it comes to sunscreen because sun damage there is a huge no-no! Plus, I’m Italian, so my skin is prone to dark spots.
PRO TIP: Use a sun hat for an extra layer of protection for that pretty face of yours!
Raw Elements Tinted SPF Face Moisturizer– I love all of this company’s products! This one is tinted, so you can still get coverage without extra makeup. It’s all-natural, ultra-moisturizing, and super water resistant, so you could honestly use this every day and not just by the pool or beach. Plus, I love that they use plastic-free packaging- I try to avoid plastic whenever I can!
COOLA Body– Coola also has a body sunscreen I recommend.
Yerba Mate Mist SPF 30– “Yerba mate tea leaf contains antioxidants that help to protect against free radicals and environmental pollutants. Have fun in the sun without worrying about sun damage!”- 100percentpure
Thinkbaby SPF50– This is most definitely my favorite brand for children! Again, most doctors do not recommend you use sunscreen on babies under six months, but this one is great for your older babies and kiddos. I like Thinksport because its extremely water resistant, making it great for kids hopping in and out of the pool, lake or ocean all day without tons of reapplications. It has an EWG rating of “1,” which is amazing! I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my kids applying chemicals straight to their skin all summer long! Have to protect that baby soft, sensitive skin even more than you do your own.
I hope that some of these natural sun products become part of your routine! And, while we’re on the topic, make sure to read my post about my favorite all-natural sunless tanner. If you’re looking to get a tan all year round without toxic sprays or harmful beds, you’ll love this product!
